Saving our Food

This weeks lesson was a continuation of last weeks. However, we were dealing with a different branch of Bio Business. Last week we focused on the health and biomedical fields, but this week we were focusing on the agricultural side of Bio Business. We spent more time discussing on three different branches. The first being Agribiology, Environmental Life Sciences and Industrial Life Sciences.

Prof told us about the different colors of biotechnology- red, blue and green. Red biotechnology applies to humans, Blue to marine life and Green to plants. It is interesting to observe the widespread application of biotechnology in the various fields. Under Agribiology, the main argument was related to food shortage in the world. There is an increasing problem of food shortage, with the increasing population. With more people venturing to urban areas, there is more need to develop new food sources. This is when we began discussing alternative methods of food production and its feasibility. Genetic Modification of food is a growing process which is catching people's attention as it provides methods to produce food which is easy to produce and even easier to preserve. However, this has received a lot of criticism on being ethical. And hence an argument does exist on whether or not to produce it. Related to this we saw some interesting presentations on the growing technology application in food production. The most interesting presentation was when one of my classmates suggested a new type of meat which can be generated from our human waste (poop :P). The first thing that hit me was Disgusting!! How could you eat your own Poop ? But then I started understanding that in this day and age you need to open your mind to all possible changes in order to survive.

Under Environmental Life Sciences, we discussed how we need new methods to reduce the waste we have around us. An interesting presentation was about vermicomposting; this method includes using earthworms to eat out on the organic waste. There are many new versions of how waste is reducing. There was a lot of interesting observations made in this class. We realized that the hardest part of adopting this growing technology which might be able to solve food and waste problems, is with the people. This goes back to Profs basic theory which all our classes are based on,

"Technology is easy, People are hard."

This was a rather interesting class. I understood different methods of how we could solve all our food shortage problems, and deal with the increasing waste. It was an interesting class with lots to learn.

Waiting for the viral to hit again :)
